Juventus striker Mario Mandzukic has been ruled out of Saturday’s Serie A fixture against Sampdoria because of a calf injury.
The Italy striker has been training with the team in the days since the World Cup but his absence could mean that Mandzuka’s team face the Italian side in the first leg of the tie at Stadio Olimpico.
Mandzukics injury came in the second half of Sunday’s 3-0 win at Palermo, when the forward was taken to the ground by medical staff after being injured by a challenge by Sampdori defender Stefano Mauri.
Sampdoria’s Mandzukić was initially expected to be rested for the match but has not recovered fully and could miss Saturday’s game.
The 30-year-old is expected to make a full recovery but Mandzuckic, who has scored six goals in his past 10 appearances, has missed the last two matches.
The team’s coach Stefano Caruso said Mandzuke was “in the dark” as to his future, but added: “Mario has to train and do everything he can to play the next game.
We will see what happens.
I am very sorry, it’s a very sad situation.”
